Ohio Single Mom Saves Big in Sewer Line Repair

When Shelley from Toledo, Ohio, woke up to the sound of her sump pump running, she didn’t think much of it. “We had been getting a lot of torrential rain,” she recalled. Occasionally, her basement would take on some water, but it always receded. This time, though, things were different.

“I went down to check and found four inches of standing water,” Shelley said. Thinking it might resolve on its own, she waited, but the situation only worsened. That night, the sound of splashing jolted her awake. Water was now pouring out of the basement toilet. “At that point, I’m like, ‘Oh no, something’s seriously wrong.’"

Shelley, a single mom juggling a full-time job, didn’t know where to turn at first. “I thought I’d need to call a plumber,” she said. Then it hit her: she had been a HomeServe customer for nearly a decade, but had never needed to use her plan before.

After contacting HomeServe, a local and reliable member of the contractor network, ASAP American Sewer & Plumbing, promptly came to Shelley’s home. At first, they ran a snake through the pipes to check for blockages, but it was clear to the plumber there was some kind of obstruction. Then, they brought in a camera to inspect further. That’s when Shelley got the bad news.

“The contractor told me a part of my main sewer line was completely collapsed,” she said. “I had no idea such a major issue was lurking underground.”

Her concerns quickly turned financial. She remembered her mom dealing with a similar issue years ago, which had cost a small fortune.

“This was one of the first times I’ve had a plan where I actually received what I paid for, and being a single mom, this is exactly the kind of protection I need," Shelley said.

“I said, ‘How much is this going to cost?’ I was panicking,” she admitted. “I didn’t have $5,000 to pull out of a magic hat.”

Thankfully, Shelley had the protection of a repair plan from HomeServe.

“I can’t describe the feeling I had when I got an email from HomeServe confirming the repair would be covered,” Shelley said. “It was incredible.”

ASAP American Sewer & Plumbing got right to work to fix the section of collapsed pipe. After digging nine feet into the ground, a total of ten feet of the sewer line was replaced, saving Shelley a whole lot of stress and about $5,200.

“HomeServe came through at the moment I needed it most, and you’ve made a loyal customer out of me. I’m going to keep rolling with you.”
